With Unseen Forces, Matt is beginning a long investigation into images and motion, objects and momentum. The piece looks to create a world where the pedestrian surroundings of everyday life are suffused with possibility: a world where the logic of dreams blooms onstage as the mundane dissolves into the poetic.
The investigation began in January 2015, at the University of Kansas. Rather than workshopping a story or of characters, this work period was an investigation into particular “mechanical modes”- ways that things can happen onstage. The wonderful students at KU (and Molly Armstrong) gave so much of their creative energy and attention to the questions set forth. Much was learned, and Matt is looking forward to the next incarnation: he’s looking towards slowly building these quality-investigations into a full piece of theatre.
